It’s Maaaaaagic!

July 10th, 20080 Commentsexperiments, fun stuff, pottery

Honestly, these are probably prototypes. I’m still getting used to this whole “painting with glass” thing. The “photographing super-shiny objects” issue is a learning experience as well. In any event! Here is my magical plate and bowl set. Glitter is difficult to photograph in the first place, the glitter detail I put on the unicorn and the fairy don’t seem to photograph well at all! (I promise, they’re all sparkley and cute.)

Magical Unicorn Plate

My intent was to create something just a little cheesy, hence the “Believe in your dreams!” and “Magical Bowl” bits on each plate. I assume the urge to write on stuff will pass; as of now I find the idea of labeling kitchenware hilarious for some reason. How delightfully juvenile.

So I got a job…

June 5th, 20080 Commentsfun stuff, jobs, pottery

What? A job? After months of struggling doing freelance? Actually I love my new job. Without naming names, I work in a paint-your-own ceramics shop. While I’ve never worked with ceramics before (Save that awesome plate I made in middle school art class…) I must say this job is awesome. One, it puts me back in a shop atmosphere. Two, I have the opportunity to teach people something new about art. Three, somehow, I got a boss that actually listens to my opinion rather than nod like a bobble-head doll. Four, did I mention the DISCOUNT? Hello, customized new dishes for my kitchen. Five, I get paid to paint. It dawned on me the other day while I was painting shop samples that someone is paying me to paint. I sat there for three hours intermittently helping customers and painting. For money. Realizations like this require the use of both bold and italics.

While I have been working on various drawings and paintings at home, I present without further ado my first finished ceramic piece, a faux Talavera bowl with a wiener dog on it I painted for what else? Mother’s Day. (My mother absoulutly adores Talavera.)

Whoops.

February 5th, 20080 Commentsfood, fun stuff, meandering

So, uh, I’ve been busy! Well, not entirely; I was sick most of January which put a damper on projects. (LIKE EPICYCLOID-A-DAY. I SWEAR THAT BLOG IS DOOMED TO FAIL.)

Lacking any other photos of current plots, I present you with a photo of a delicious King Cake I made today with the help of a dear friend. The only sweet part is the icing; everything else is fairly easy on the sugar and cinnamon. Still, my first King Cake turned out pretty good I’d say!

Also, for those interested, I will be sharing a table with Nicole Mills a.k.a. pinkfairywand at ConDFW in Richardson, TX this year. We will be hocking a number of hand-made items to those interested in buying! The SciFi/Fantasy event is from February 22-24.

Wizards

January 5th, 20080 Commentsanimation, fun stuff

Last night I finally got to watch my new copy of Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards. I’ve been wanting to see it since reading about it in one of my animation history books when I was oh, about 15 years old.

Bakshi doesn’t typically have great animation but I like the films for the conceptual value. I was really enamored with the weird overlays and rotoscoping. The background art outshone the animation, music, and dialog by leaps and bounds.

Story was pretty boss too; I enjoy stories of the post-apocalypse that don’t involve cyberpunks fighting the machine. The soundtrack was filled with odd “bow chicka wow” guitars that kinda set me off, but it added a weird quirk to the whole thing. I imagine if it had a heavy metal track I would’ve been completely starry-eyed just because of the part of me deep down that loves shitty animation paired with a sweet guitar solos. Speaking of which, where’s my copy of Heavy Metal anyway?

Resolution

December 31st, 20070 Commentscomputers, drawing, fun stuff

At first I figured this was arbitrary, but I can probably slip it in under the radar as a New Year’s Resolution!

I’m not the most disiplined person in the world, as evidenced by my failure to upkeep various blogs and other dated material. There is nothing to indicate I reguarly produce work so I shall do so here! I will post more screenshots, photos and jps of my work.

Let’s start with something I did purely for fun yesterday, a LiveJournal mood icon set for my friend Nicole. She enjoys a Japanese comic book called Naruto so I made some of a character she likes named Temari.

(Please click to see a larger version.)

I don’t usually do pixel-work, but it’s fun to do every once in a while. I just started with a head base and put the different facial expressions in different layers. Easy to do and produced a fairly nice result, I think.
